Japanese Karakuri gosho-ningyo (mechanical palace doll) depicting the lion dance from the Noh drama Shakkyo, papier-mâché figure depicted seated with both legs thrust forward, dressed in a chirimen silk creope vest with embroidered designs and a silk brocade haragake bib, in his right hand he holds a lion head and in his left a rattle tree with bells attached, body covered over all in a wihite gofun with painted features and silk fiber hair, red silk peony atop his head with additional long red hair braid referring to the lion’s long red hair as he dances among the peonies in the drama, knob at lower back allows the arms to raise and lower separately, signs of wear, bend to tree rattle, seated atop a white silk cushion.
