Sosaku ningyo of Moso by Okamoto Gyokusui IV (1898-1972), gosho-style figure depicting the filial son Moso coming home to his aged mother with a bamboo shoot, hoe over his right shoulder sporting a lacquered paper cap, dressed in a silk brocade outer coat and a kimekomi style under bib, although a gosho in basic conception, rendered in a modern sosaku style with flexed leg and jaunty attitude, small features, painted details with rouged cheeks, mounted on a wood base, Gyokusui was a founding member of the Hakutakukai and a seminal player in the development of the Japanese art doll movement of the late 1920’s, mounted on contemporary lacquer base, fading, damage to right foot, minor signs of wear.
